About the College

The College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario is the organization established by the provincial government to oversee the practice of occupational therapists in Ontario. The College is responsible for protecting the public interest by setting standards for practice and having programs in place to see that occupational therapists practice safely and effectively.

The Mission

The College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO) is a self-governing body that protects the public interest and improves their health and well-being by registering, regulating, and supporting the ongoing competency of Occupational Therapists.

The Vision

By 2010, COTO is recognized and respected for its strong collaborative relationships that influence Ontario's Health-care system while supporting the needs of the public through the occupational therapy profession.

Positions Available
  • Non-Council Subcommittee Member * Practice Issues Subcommittee
    The College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario is seeking to fill a volunteer opening on our Practice Issues Subcommittee (this is a non-Council position).
    Specifically, this Subcommittee is looking for an OT providing mental health services in a rural community setting (an area outside of the Greater Toronto Area).
    OTs who participate on a College Subcommittee/Committee are appointed for a three year term. Participants are provided with a per diem honorarium and expenses are reimbursed (travel, food, accommodation, and if necessary, some preparation time). This Subcommittee meets approximately 4-6 times a year, with brief teleconference activity between meetings on specific issues. Meetings are typically held at the College offices, and are scheduled to allow for travel in and out of the city on the same day, if possible.
    If you are interested in being considered for this Subcommittee, please submit a cover letter with a copy of your most recent resume for our review by April 25, 2008.

  • Occupational Therapists in Ontario can now apply for professional development funds through HealthForceOntario
    Important notice from HealthForceOntario

    HealthForceOntario's Allied Health Professional Development Fund is a reimbursement program currently available to nine allied health professions.

    For the third consecutive year, the government is providing financial support for health professionals through the Allied Health Professional Development Fund. Practising members of nine allied health professions will be able to apply for as much as $1500 for professional development courses and programs. For more information visit:

  • The College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario is seeking to fill an opening on the Editorial Board (this is a non-Committee position).
    The College requires a Francophone Registrant to review the translation of, and provide feedback on, French College documents and publications.

  • Council approves new reinstatement fee
    At the October council meeting, Council approved a Bylaw Change to Fees, introducing a reduced application (reinstatement) fee. Effective immediately, any applicant who previously held a certificate of registration with the College will pay a reinstatement fee of $40.00 (plus GST) plus the registration fee to obtain a new certificate of registration. Previously, this type of applicant was required to pay the $200.00 (plus GST application fee plus the registration fee. This reinstatement fee applies to returning Registrants who meet all of the registration requirements and whose application does not require a referral to the Registration Committee.

  • The Ministry of Transportation has revised its application form
    and the health professionals that are eligible to complete the application form for clients to obtain an Accessible Parking Permit.

  • The Government of Canada's Foreign Credentials Referral Office (FCRO), located within Citizenship and Immigration Canada, helps internationally trained individuals find the information and services they need to get their training and credentials assessed and recognized in Canada.

    A key component of the FCRO is its website www.credentials.gc.ca, which features a tool called Working in Canada, which helps individuals identify occupations in Canada for which they may be qualified, as well as the regulatory body appropriate for their needs. The tool also provides individuals with detailed labour market information, based on where they live, or plan to live.

    Service Canada provides information and referral services in Canada via a dedicated, toll-free phone service (1-888-854-1805).

  • Ontario Health Plan for an Influenza Pandemic (OHPIP)
    For your information the 2007 version of the Ontario Health Plan for an Influenza Pandemic (OHPIP) has been released and is available on the ministry's public site at: www.health.gov.on.ca/pandemic. There have been a number of updates to the Plan to include areas such as mental health, pediatrics and obstetrics, cancer care and others.
