Under the current legislation, only individuals who are registered with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario are permitted to call themselves an "occupational therapist", "OT" or use any variation of these two titles. This suggests to members of the public that these individuals have met the requirements to be a member of the regulated profession of occupational therapy.

Sometimes, individuals may have taken courses in occupational therapy. In taking courses, these individuals may be aware of some aspects of the profession but they do not have the right to call themselves an occupational therapist. To verify that someone is an occupational therapist, you can search the Find an OT section. If unable to find an occupational therapist on the public register, please contact the Manager, Investigations & Resolutions.

Sometimes the College will be required to investigate concerns regarding an individual who is "holding themselves out" to be an occupational therapist. At the conclusion of their investigation, the College may advise the individuals in question of the need to be registered with the College in order to use title, issue a cease and desist order or proceed with a court injunction or prosecution.

Currently, there are no individuals being prosecuted by the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario related to the misuse of title.
