Competency Enhancement

Competency Enhancement includes a variety of tools to assist occupational therapists to enhance and demonstrate continuing competence. The College provides some mandatory tools. Occupational therapists may also choose to use additional tools.

Professional Portfolio

Maintaining a Professional Portfolio helps occupational therapists reflect upon their practice and demonstrate participation in continuing competency and professional development. Occupational therapists use the process of developing a portfolio to engage in self-evaluation and store relevant materials that demonstrate participation in Competency Enhancement. The portfolio consists of a binder and guidelines for content. The materials stored in the binder should be meaningful to the therapist and their continuing learning, and must include the three mandatory tools. Occupational therapists maintain a record of these tools for a period of 5 years. If required to participate in Competency Review and/or Evaluation the occupational therapist will submit these mandatory tools to the College.

The three mandatory tools are:
  1. Prescribed Regulatory Education Program (PREP) Modules - self-directed learning modules that help occupational therapists ensure they are up-to-date on the key issues and practices of the profession.

  2. Self-Assessment Tool - a process to promote self-reflection on competence relative to the Essential Competencies of practice. The Self-Assessment tool is completed every two years.

  3. Professional Development Plan - a plan for the Occupational therapists to document their own learning goals, activities and results of the learning. This tool is completed annually.
Occupational therapists are required to retain copies of completed PREP Modules, review of PREP Rationale, Self-Assessment Tools and Professional Development Plans in the portfolio for five years. Materials from the portfolio will assist occupational therapists in demonstrating continuing competence.

Please Note: Additional requirements may be published from time to time.
