Occupational Therapists from Other Jurisdictions within Canada

Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA)

Each provincial occupational therapy regulatory authority in Canada supports the mobility of occupational therapists across Canada. With this in mind, individuals who are currently registered with another OT regulatory organization in Canada may be eligible to apply to the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario under the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) (PDF: 336kb).

The MRA Checklist (PDF: 448kb) describes the eligibility criteria to apply under the MRA.

Occupational Therapists must hold a current registration in another jurisdiction when applying under the MRA. Complete the MRA Application Form (PDF: 93kb) as well as the College's Registration Application Form (PDF: 264kb). Through the MRA process the regulatory college completing the MRA application will forward necessary documents to the College such as transcripts and proof of passing the CAOT exam. There is a fee that must be paid to the Regulatory College that completes the MRA application. Applying to the College under the Regular Process

If you are moving to Ontario from another province you are not required to apply to the College under the MRA. You can follow the regular application process. Complete the Registration Application Form and submit all required documents and fees. Note that verification of registration in other jurisdictions... Verification of registration in other jurisdictions is a requirement for registration in Ontario. Applicants who hold (or have held) a registration(s) or license(s) within another jurisdiction, must forward the attached form to the appropriate regulatory body and have it completed and returned directly to the College. The Authorization for Release of Information Form(s) (PDF: 63kb) must be returned to the College before registration can be granted.

Temporary certificate of registration

A temporary certificate of registration may be granted to individual occupational therapists who hold a valid certificate of registration as an occupational therapist in another jurisdiction with similar educational and clinical requirements. The individual will be providing short term (no longer than four months) occupational therapy services in Ontario that include a component of direct assessment or treatment of clients. A temporary certificate is not intended for therapists who are working in short term contract positions but rather for individuals who are coming into Ontario for such activities as a work exchange or participating in a continuing education workshop/course that involves clients or providing consultation.

Registration Requirements: Temporary registrants will receive a registration card, tax receipt, Professional Misconduct Regulation and the most recent College newsletter. All College documents, such as regulations, standards of practice, and practice guidelines can be obtained from the Resource Room.
