Re-registration
Applicants who were previously registered with COTO are required to re-apply for a certificate of registration. Applicants must obtain a certificate of registration and registration number before returning to work as an occupational therapist in Ontario; this includes orientation at the work place.
Generally, re-registration involves submitting to the College a complete Registration Application Form (PDF: 264kb), paying the applicable application and registration fees (PDF: 16kb), and submitting a copy of your professional liability insurance certificate. You are not required to resubmit documentation that the College already has on file (i.e. transcripts, legal work status documentation or CAOT exam results).
Once your Registration Application Form and the required supporting documentation has been received, barring no errors or omissions, the College will issue a certificate of registration and registration number within 14 days. You will receive a wallet card, wall certificate, receipt, and updated publications for your Registrant Resource Binder.
Note that you may not resume work until you have received confirmation of registration and a new registration number from the College.
Currency Requirement
Applicants to the College must have recently graduated from an OT program; or have practiced within the scope of the profession for a set amount of hours during any portion of the previous 5 years; or provide evidence, satisfactory to the Registrar, of possessing current knowledge, skill, and ability. The currency requirement for registration is stated in the College's General Regulation and is summarized as follows:
An applicant must have one of the following:
- completed 750 hours in the three years preceding the application;
- completed 1,550 hours in the five years preceding the application;
- graduated from an approved Occupational Therapy program in the 18 months prior to date of application *
- completed a College approved reentry/refresher program in the 18 months prior to the date of application
* applicants may request the College to review a post graduate academic program as evidence of currency
Applicants who have not worked for a number of years and therefore do not meet the currency requirement (current practice hours), will be required to complete a re-entry program, generally consisting of a volunteer supervised clinical placement.
To initiate the re-entry program, applicants must provide a detailed account of their OT employment history for the past 10 years, including dates of employment, hours worked per week, volunteer work and/or continuing education courses completed within the scope of OT on the Additional Currency Data Sheet (PDF: 22kb). Applicants who have not practiced OT in the last 10 years will be required to pass the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapy (CAOT) certification exam.
Once your application is reviewed, you will be informed, in writing, as to the length (number of hours/weeks) of your re-entry program. It is the applicant's responsibility to secure a clinical setting and a Practice Supervisor with which to complete the re-entry hours. Once you have demonstrated successful completion of the re-entry program, you will be considered current in practice hours for a period of 18 months, and will be eligible to proceed with the application process. For more information on the Re-Entry Program, please refer to the Re-Entry Program - Practice Supervisor Information Package (PDF: 161kb).
Re-registering after working as an ot in other jurisdiction
Applicants who hold or have held a registration/license in another jurisdiction since resignation from COTO must request each regulatory body complete and send a Regulatory History Form (PDF: 63kb) directly to COTO. Applicants who held a registration/license issued by the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) must request a Letter of Standing from the NBCOT.
