How to Find an Occupational Therapist (OT)

Find an occupational therapist using the public register

To confirm that an occupational therapist (OT) is registered or to locate an Ontario occupational therapist, visit our public register Find an Occupational Therapist.

This public list of information about occupational therapists can be accessed any time on our website.

All the individuals who are qualified and able to practice occupational therapy in Ontario are listed with a status of 'registered'. Previous registrants of the College are also listed.

Being registered with the College means that an occupational therapist:

  • meets the requirements to practice, and
  • is accountable to the College for their conduct and meeting the standards of the profession.

Information about a health care professional can help you make choices about your heath care. You can make sure a person providing occupational therapy services in Ontario is registered with the College.

It is illegal in Ontario for someone to use the title "occupational therapist", the initials "OT", or any variation of the title if they are not registered with the College.

Information available about occupational therapists

The Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the College bylaws specify what information about each occupational therapist is to be kept and made available to the public.

Here is the information you can find about occupational therapists and former occupational therapists:

Concerns and/or Conditions

If known, the College posts details of any existing conditions or restrictions (such as bail conditions) imposed by a court or other lawful authority, except if the publication of such information would violate any publication ban known to the College.

If known, the College posts details of any finding of guilt made by a court or other lawful authority (unless it has been reversed on appeal or judicial review) made on or after January 1, 2016, related to:

  • a criminal offence;
  • any offence relating to the prescribing, compounding, dispensing, selling, or administering of drugs; and
  • any offence relevant to an occupational therapist’s suitability to practise occupational therapy.

If known, the College posts details of any pending criminal charges laid against occupational therapists as well as details of charges laid for non-criminal offences, provided the non-criminal offences are relevant to the occupational therapist’s suitability to practise occupational therapy. The College only publishes this information for charges laid on or after November 1, 2017.

If an occupational therapist has had, or is having, interactions with the Discipline Committee, the information is posted on Find an Occupational Therapist.

Information includes:

  • A notation of any referral made by the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee to the Discipline Committee, including the date of referral, as well as details of the status of the proceedings, until the matter is resolved
  • a summary of the allegations of professional misconduct or incompetence against an occupational therapist referred to discipline, as well as a link to a copy of the Notice of Hearing, until the matter is resolved
  • for all cases decided on or after June 4, 2003, and not removed from the register prior to June 4, 2009, if the Discipline Committee made a finding of professional misconduct and/or incompetence against an occupational therapist, a summary of the facts on which the finding was based; the penalty; and details of whether the finding is under appeal
  • for cases decided on or after May 30, 2017, the result of all hearings before a panel of the Discipline Committee, regardless of whether there is a finding of professional misconduct and/or incompetence
  • Details of any pending reinstatement applications/hearings

The Fitness to Practise Committee can find an occupational therapist to be incapacitated if they are experiencing a physical or mental condition or disorder (e.g. substance use disorder, mental health disorder) which requires either a suspension from practice or terms, conditions or limitations to be placed on their practice in order to maintain public safety.

If a matter is referred to the Fitness to Practise Committee, the College posts only basic information about referrals to the Fitness to Practise Committee and of the result of incapacity proceedings. The College also posts any information the Fitness to Practise Committee specifies is to be included on Find an Occupational Therapist.

If an occupational therapist was the subject of an investigation that resulted in one of the following outcomes, it will be posted on Find an Occupational Therapist. This applies to complaints and reports reviewed by the ICRC on or after May 30, 2017. Potential outcomes include:

  • Caution-in-Person: a caution-in-person is ordered when the ICRC has a significant concern about conduct or practice that can have a direct impact on patient care, safety, or the public interest if it is not addressed. A caution-in-person is a face-to-face discussion between the occupational therapist and the ICRC, to review the practice and the changes the practitioner will make to help avoid a similar incident from occurring in the future.
  • Specified Continuing Education or Remedial Program (SCERP): a SCERP is ordered when the ICRC has a significant concern about conduct or practice that can have a direct impact on patient care, safety, or the public interest if it is not addressed, and believe that the concerns are best addressed through additional education or remediation.
  • Undertaking: an undertaking is a binding and enforceable agreement between an occupational therapist and the College which sets out an obligation or restriction that the occupational therapist is agreeable to. Undertakings are issued when there are concerns about conduct or practice that may have a direct impact on patient care, safety, or the public interest if it is not addressed.

If known, the College posts any findings of malpractice or professional negligence made on or after June 4, 2009.

If known, the College posts details of discipline and incapacity findings that have been made by any other regulatory body on or after January 1, 2016.

Terms, conditions, and limitations (TCLs) may be imposed on an occupational therapist's registration by the Registration, Discipline or Fitness to Practise Committee.

Terms, conditions, and limitations generally limit or restrict the occupational therapist's practice. For example: restricting the occupational therapist's practice to a certain practice setting.

Terms, conditions, and limitations can also outline conditions that the occupational therapist must meet. For example: requiring the occupational therapist to work under supervision for a defined period of time.

Terms, conditions, and limitations may also require the occupational therapist complete an educational course, or attend some type of training. The College only posts existing terms, conditions, and limitations and they are removed from Find an Occupational Therapist once fulfilled.

Information not available about occupational therapists

The list of occupational therapists located at Find an Occupational Therapist does not provide information about:

  • fees for services
  • where the occupational therapist obtained their education
  • any additional training the occupational therapist may have obtained after graduation
  • whether the occupational therapist treats a specific condition (for example, autism, stroke, arthritis)
  • gender of the occupational therapist
  • whether the occupational therapist works with support personnel sometimes called occupational therapist assistants
