The College’s revised Code of Ethics and accompanying Guide to Ethical Practice is in effect as of September 21, 2026.

The updated Code reflects the evolving nature of occupational therapy practice and provides guidance to support ethical decision-making across all practice settings. It lays out a broader framework of ethical principles and core values, including – Accountability, Collaboration, Humility, Integrity, Respect, and Transparency.

Updates include:

  • A new focus on continuous learning, minimizing harm, and respecting autonomy as key ethical principles.
  • Greater emphasis on equity, diversity, inclusion, cultural safety, and reflective practice.
  • New guidance related to trauma-informed practice, risk management, and the appropriate use of social media, virtual care, and artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Ethical Practice Checklist to support ethical practice.
  • A new Guide to Ethical Practice that provides practical context, use of an Ethical Decision Making Framework and resources to help registrants navigate ethical issues and dilemmas in practice.

The revised Code and Guide are intended to support registrants in upholding public trust, promoting ethical practice, and making sound professional judgments in increasingly complex practice environments.
