Open Consultation on Proposed Controlled Act Regulation

We invite you to provide your feedback before midnight on June 3, 2018

On December 30, 2017, the controlled act of psychotherapy was proclaimed granting occupational therapists authority to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy and use the title ‘psychotherapist’. As the next step in this process, the College must pass a regulation under the Occupational Therapy Act, 1991 outlining the specific conditions that OTs must meet to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy safely and effectively.

Controlled acts are identified in the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA) as those activities and procedures where risk of harm to the client is perceived to be significant. The College is asking for your input about the proposed new regulation on the controlled act of psychotherapy.

The controlled act of psychotherapy is described as: treating by means of psychotherapy technique, delivered through a therapeutic relationship, an individual’s serious disorder of thought, cognition, mood, emotional regulation, perception or memory that may seriously impair the individual’s judgement, insight, behaviour, communication or social functioning.

Please take a few minutes to review the PDF of the draft controlled act regulation and rationale (in English or French) then submit your feedback to the College by midnight on Sunday, June 3, 2018.
