Registrant Feedback on Competency Assessment

Have you been curious about the competency assessment?

The competency assessment is an opportunity to reflect on your practice and demonstrate how you incorporate the Competencies for Occupational Therapists in Canada and Standards of Practice into your daily work. The purpose is to identify strengths and areas for professional growth and development. It is one way to ensure that occupational therapists are providing safe, ethical, and effective services.

Registrant Feedback

45 registrants recently completed the competency assessment and gave us permission to share their feedback. Here’s what they had to say about their experience:

  • I think this exercise has been helpful to just “pause” and reflect on how I am managing my practice, as well as the example I am setting for my team. This exercise has helped me feel confident that I am competent in this standard, while bring[ing] to attention areas to always “keep in mind”.
  • Overall, this exercise has given me a closer look at some areas for improvement within my professional record keeping and communication. I acknowledge that as practitioners with a strong voice, language can be powerful and we often get into habits of using and over-using certain language that may not best reflect the awareness and competency we value as professionals.
  • The assessor provided coaching regarding consent and record keeping, both of which were areas that I wanted to begin implementing changes.
  • Overall, the Competency Assessment was a safe and positive experience. I felt that my peer assessor did an excellent job making me feel at ease and comfortable, and they helped to clarify questions or any misunderstandings that I had during the assessment interview. I also had an opportunity to explain my responses and provide additional details, when necessary. I feel that the competency assessment process was well-suited to this year’s learning module and goal setting. There was a clear connection drawn between our goals and occupational therapist competencies, and this was seamlessly woven into the assessment process.
  • I believe the whole process of the Competency Assessment was great to allow reflection on my practice and identify areas to strengthen to keep improving my practice and the services I offer my client.
  • The entire assessment process has helped me reflect on my practice and identify areas where I can continue to grow and improve. It has also helped me develop a more consistent and organized record keeping proces […] I feel I am much more confident and knowledgeable in my day-to-day practice.
  • I felt validated in knowing that the care I provide and the standards I set for myself are in alignment with the standards and competencies set forth by COTO.
