Q&As Notice

As of June 1, 2023, the updated Standards of Practice will apply to all occupational therapists. The College’s practice guidance documents, case studies, Q&As, and other materials are currently being updated to reflect these changes.

In case of discrepancies, please refer to the Standards of Practice, 2023 for the most current information. If you have any questions, please contact the College’s Practice Resource Service practice@coto.org.

QuestionAm I required to co-sign the occupational therapist assistant’s (OTA) documentation?

Answer: No. However, an occupational therapist must review their OTA’s documentation as part of the communication and supervision plan. Depending on the practice setting and the client population, the occupational therapist can determine what frequency of review is appropriate.

As the supervising occupational therapist, you are expected to document in the client record confirming that you have read the OTA’s notes.

For more information, see the Standards for the Supervision of Occupational Therapist Assistants.
