The College analyzes data about cases and uses it to highlight trends and provide insights to registrants that may be helpful in their practice. We looked at the investigations data from the last six months of 2025 and this is what we found:
Two of the competencies that come up frequently are:
- B.1 – Communicate in a respectful and effective manner
- A.1 – Establish trusted relationships with clients
Three of the practice standards that come up frequently include:
- Standard for Assessment & Intervention
- Standard for Record Keeping
- Standard for Consent
Let’s consider the competencies B.1 and A.1 as well as the Standard for Assessment & Intervention. These core resources speak to principles including:
- Collaborating and communicating with clients
- Co-creating a plan
- Clarity around an occupational therapist’s role
- Confirming client’s understanding
When you think about these principles, are there areas where you could enhance your practice? The College produces case studies, resources and learning modules to support quality practice and frequently addresses questions about these areas.
Access resources online or contact practice@coto.org with your questions.
In case you missed it, the College’s most recent Case Study: Learnings From a Complaint About Equipment Funding provides insight into the importance of effective communication. This case was developed to assist occupational therapists with explaining their reasons for recommendations, how to review goals with clients, and preventing misunderstandings and unmet expectations. The case also shows how closely connected issues of consent are with communication.
