The College has updated its Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) practice guidance following the latest recommendations from the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario. The Coroner’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) Death Review Committee (MDRC) issued a report called 2024-3 Navigating Vulnerability in Non-Reasonably Foreseeable Natural Deaths naming occupational therapists in their recommendations. The updated guidance provides an overview of the legislation and how it applies to practice while placing emphasis on addressing and supporting the unique needs of client requesting MAiD.

Highlights include:

  • Updated practice guidance to help occupational therapists understand the unique needs of Track 1 and Track 2 MAiD requests.
  • Focus on complex social factors as a key part of occupational therapy assessments.
  • Understanding and applying the occupational therapist’s role for safe, ethical, and competent care throughout the MAiD process.
