Occupational Therapy Services During COVID-19: Providing Clarification

We are hearing from occupational therapists that they are feeling uncertain about if, or how to proceed with occupational therapy service during this difficult and constantly changing time. We hope this guidance will be helpful.

Can I provide virtual care to my clients right now?

Occupational therapists can provide essential services either by telephone or other virtual means. In-person services can only be provided if the service is urgent.

What does essential mean?

During this pandemic, the provincial government has directed that only urgent and essential healthcare services are to be provided. These orders are reviewed regularly by the province and renewed as needed in response to COVID-19.

There is no widespread definition of essential service. Occupational therapists can use this general guideline when developing their specific rationale/criteria to determine whether services are essential:

The clients’ health or function would considerably decline if occupational therapy service is not provided, or the services are time sensitive to avoid negative outcomes.

Examples include preventing physical deterioration in children, pressure ulcers or injuries in older adults, or where there is a risk to self harm in adolescents, or providing support to children and youth who have autism.

Please note these are examples only and clinicians and organizations will determine their own rationale and criteria for what is essential in their service area.
