2022 College Response to the Coroner's Report: Deaths from Power Recliner Lift Chairs

The Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario requested the College notify occupational therapists about the deaths of individuals with cognitive decline from the use of power recliner lift chairs. The Coroner of Ontario has recommended that a client’s safe use of power recliner lift chairs be included in the occupational therapy home assessment to prevent future deaths and injuries.

The 2022 College Response to the Coroner’s Report:Deaths from Power Recliner Lift Chairs is a practice resource intended to highlight the risks and benefits associated with the use of power recliner lift chairs and provides key considerations when assessing safety or prescribing this equipment.

Two case studies about the College’s Response to the Coroner’s Report and are available for review on the College website.

A French version of the College Response to the Coroner’s Report will be posted under Standards and Resources as soon as it is available.
