If you will not be working or using the title occupational therapist in Ontario you may choose to resign your registration.

Resigning means you will not be able to work as an occupational therapist, use the occupational therapist title, abbreviation, or designation OT Reg. (Ont.), in Ontario, until you are re-registered with the College.

Please review the options below before resigning from the College. OTs may access their profiles through the login (previously called Registrants Only).

Option 1: Maintain your registration and return to practice in Ontario at any time throughout the year.

If you choose to maintain your registration, you must be in compliance with all College requirements, for example, professional liability insurance, quality assurance requirements, etc. In addition, you will need to renew your registration by the May 31 deadline. Failure to renew your registration by the May 31 deadline will result in your registration being suspended for non-payment of fees.

If your registration is suspended for failing to pay the annual renewal fee, the suspension may only be lifted on payment of all outstanding renewal and late fees. If you do not have the suspension lifted within two years, your registration will automatically be revoked. Previous registrants who have been revoked must undergo a review by the Registration Committee prior to re-registration.

Option 2: Resign your registration


This means that you will no longer be registered with the College. To resign your registration you must log in to the members section, select Resign Certificate, and follow the instructions.

If you decide to resign, you will be required to re-apply for registration prior to returning to practice in Ontario. Generally, re-registration with the College involves submitting the following:

  • online application form;
  • results of a Vulnerable Sector Check - for more information please click here;
  • evidence of valid professional liability insurance; and
  • applicable fees.

You are not required to resubmit documentation that the College already has on file, for example, transcripts or exam results.

Considerations

When determining whether to renew or resign your registration, consider the merits of maintaining professional liability insurance, the duration for which you intend to be on leave, and the comparative costs associated with each scenario. Please refer to the following fee table.

Partial refunds

If you renew your registration and will not be working in Ontario after August 31, you may be eligible to receive a partial refund of half the annual renewal fee ($371.52). To receive a partial refund, the following two conditions must be met:


  1. Employment in Ontario must end on or before August 31 of the renewal year.
  2. Registration must be resigned online on or before August 31 of the renewal year.
Please note, if a partial refund is granted, a new tax receipt will be issued for the renewal year. Partial refunds will not be granted to OTs who resign after August 31 of the renewal year.
