New Guidelines for Working with Third Party Payers

The College sees a high volume of questions and complaints related to OT practice when funding for service is provided by third party payers.

The new Guidelines for Working with Third Party Payers provide answers to frequently asked questions about third party referrals and funding sources and outline critical issues for OTs to consider when working with third parties.

These Guidelines are designed to clarify expectations and assist in the application of standards, regulations and legislation to enable OTs to provide safe, competent, and ethical care.

Key topics covered in the Guidelines

  • providing ethical and competent client care
  • defining your role and setting expectations with stakeholders
  • obtaining informed consent
  • managing records and reports
  • managing conflicts of interest
  • maintaining professional boundaries
  • using the occupational therapist title
  • establishing an independent practice
  • providing service to clients who live outside Ontario
